How can science support twin transitions? A sociotechnical imaginaries viewpoint

introduction:

Promoting twin (sustainability and digital) transitions of agrifood systems is a key priority in the European Union (Muench et al., 2022). Twin transitions are purposeful, paradigm-shifting movements of complex systems (which contain social, technological, and natural elements) toward a more sustainable and digitalised future state (Lioutas et al., 2024). In this vein, they represent strategically designed processes (Tabares et al., 2025) in which digital technology fosters the achievement of sustainability targets (Ben Youssef, 2025), and sustainability thinking serves as a blueprint for envisioning, developing, and implementing digital technologies (Charatsari, 2024).
